How to I benefit from the ability to make contactless purchases?
- Contactless purchases are quick and easy. There is no need to swipe, insert, sign or enter a PIN for transactions of $80 or less in New Zealand. And since your card never leaves your hand, there is a reduced risk of it being copied, so the card is safer.
How do I know if I can make a contactless payment?
- Here is an example of a contactless reader. It is attached to the main EFTPOS terminal (although some contactless readers are being built into the terminal). Note that it displays both the Visa pay Wave and MasterCard PayPass logos, indicating that it can read data for contactless transactions from Visa and MasterCard cards.
How do I make a contactless purchase?
- You will need to hold your card against, or slightly over the contactless reader for about ½ a second until you hear a beep, after which the reader will flash green.
When will I need to enter my PIN for a contactless purchase?
- In New Zealand, a single contactless purchase is limited to NZ$80.00 which is ideal for small day-to-day purchases. You will not normally need to enter a PIN for such purchases. For a purchase of more than NZ$80.00, you can still use your GAS Fuel Saver Plus credit card by entering a PIN. If you use your card overseas to make a contactless purchase, different limits or requirements may apply to determine when you must use your PIN or sign to use your card.
Is there a risk of being charged for somebody else's purchase as I walk past a contactless reader?
- There is no risk of accidental purchase. The card has to be very close to the reader for the transaction to occur. Nor is there any risk of being charged twice for the same purchase - even if you tap the contactless reader twice by mistake.
